Cars hit two bicyclists this week on Hilton Head Island as tourism season ramps up

Two bicyclists were hit on Hilton Head Island this week as tourism season continues to ramp up on the island, according to authorities.

On Monday, a Jeep Wrangler hit a bicyclist on Mathews Drive at around 9:50 a.m., said Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Bob Bromage.

The Jeep was turning left from Mathews Court onto Mathews Drive when the car hit a woman on a bicycle who was “stationary,” according to S.C. Highway Patrol Nick Pye. She was taken to the hospital for her injuries.

On Thursday, another bicyclist was hit on U.S. 278 and Museum Street, Bromage said.

There was no official word on injuries but Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue and Beaufort County EMS showed up to evaluate injuries.

S.C. Highway Patrol investigated that crash as well but did not immediately have information on it.

“With tourism season underway on Hilton Head, we urge motorists and bicyclists to exercise more caution,” said Bromage.

The crashes occurred as the island prepares for an influx of golfers and fans next week attending RBC Heritage Presented By Boeing at Harbour Town Golf Links in Sea Pines.

As of Wednesday, occupancy at island hotels during Heritage week is expected to be around 93.5%, according to third-party metrics provided to the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton Chamber of Commerce. Home and villa rentals are expected to have an occupancy of about 77.1%, said chamber spokeswoman Charlie Clark, who cited the data.
