Coroner identifies pedestrian killed Monday night in US 278 hit-and-run near Bluffton
Police are investigating after a pedestrian was killed Monday night in a hit-and-run crash in Okatie, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Andrew LeMaster, 40, of Bluffton was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Beaufort County Deputy Coroner Debbie Youmans. The crash took place on U.S. 278 near Okatie Center Boulevard, according to Master Trooper David Jones of the Highway Patrol.
Around 8:30 p.m., the car was heading east on U.S. 278, when it struck the pedestrian and fled. The car that hit the pedestrian is unknown, Jones said. Trooper Nick Pye with the SCHP said on social media that police are looking for a car with damage to its front end and or windshield.
At least two people have been killed in crashes on Beaufort County roads and six on Jasper County roads in 2022, according to data from the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
SCHP’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating the fatal crash.
