Fire at Burton apartment complex displaces family of six Friday night, officials say

A fire Friday night at a Burton apartment complex could have displaced all six of the families in the building were it not for a sprinkler system that put it out before firefighters arrived, Burton Fire District spokesperson Capt. Dan Byrne said in a press release.

Firefighters arrived at the apartment complex on Laurel Bay Road around 8:30 p.m. where a grease fire broke out in a third-floor apartment, according to the press release. When they got there, they saw smoke coming from the apartment. Inside, a sprinkler system above the stove that emits approximately 25 gallons of water a minute had put it out.

The family, two parents and four children, could not stay in the apartment because of smoke damage and the amount of water in the apartment. The other five families that live in the building, the press release said, were able to return to their homes.

The American Red Cross is helping the family.
