Coroner identifies the pickup truck driver killed Sunday night on S.C. 46 in Beaufort

The pickup driver who ran off S.C. 46 in Beaufort Sunday night has been identified as a 47-year-old Savannah man, the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office said.

Gerardo Campa-De Leon, 47, of Savannah Georgia, was was pronounced dead at the scene Sunday night, said Deputy Coroner Debbie Youmans from the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

The crash took place around 9:15 p.m. after Campa-De Leon, driving a 2015 Chevrolet pickup truck, ran off the road and struck a ditch, Sgt. Sonny Collins with the S.C. Highway Patrol said. Campa-De Leon was the only person in the car at the time, Collins said.

The crash is under investigation by the Highway Patrol, Collins said.

There have been at least 23 fatalities on Beaufort County roads in the past year, according to the latest data from the Department of Public Safety.
