Coroner identifies pedestrian killed Wednesday on Sea Island Parkway on Lady’s Island

The pedestrian struck and killed by a vehicle Wednesday night on Sea Island Parkway on Lady’s Island has been identified as a 75-year-old St. Helena man, according to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

Mark Harbaugh, 75, of St. Helena Island died at the scene after 8 p.m. on Sea Island Parkway between Meridian Road and Youmans Drive, according to Tiffany Lovitt from the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

Harbaugh was hit by a Chrysler PT Cruiser that was heading north on Sea Island Parkway. The driver of the Chrysler was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, according to Trooper David Jones from the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A section of the road where the crash took place was closed following the collision, according to an alert from the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

An autopsy for Harbaugh has been scheduled for Wednesday morning at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

At least six pedestrians have been killed on Beaufort County roads and 175 on South Carolina roads in 2021, according to the latest data from the Department of Public Safety.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
