Coroner identifies three killed in car crash Saturday night on Old Charleston Highway

Two teenagers and a Hardeeville man have been identified by the Jasper County Coroner’s Office as the three individuals killed in a car crash Saturday night on Old Charleston Highway.

JonPaul Gonzalez, 19, of Bluffton, and Madison Klepesky, 18, of Pennsylvania, died at the scene of the crash around 10:30 p.m., according to Jasper County Coroner Willie P. Aiken III. Herbert Parker, 35, of Hardeeville, died Sunday at Memorial Hospital in Savannah, Aiken said.

The crash happened at the intersection of Becks Ferry Road and Old Charleston Highway between a 2017 Nissan Altima and a 2017 Hyundai, according to Master Trooper David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol. The driver of the Nissan was going north on Old Charleston Highway when the Hyundai was attempting to cross the highway to continue onto Becks Ferry Road, Jones said. The driver of the Nissan was not wearing a seat belt, according to Jones, and the two passengers in the Hyundai were wearing their seat belts. The cars collided and veered off the left side of the road, hitting several trees.

A spokesperson from the South Carolina Highway Patrol could not immediately be reached to clarify who was driving and what car they were in.

At least 17 people have died in car accidents in Jasper County in 2021, according to the state Department of Public Safety’s latest data.

The crash is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
