Ridgeland woman last seen in May 2020 still missing after more than a year, police say

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to be on the lookout for a 31-year-old woman who has been missing for more than a year, according to the office’s Facebook page.

Chasity Evans, 31, of Ridgeland, who was reported missing on Nov. 4, was last seen by her father in May 2020, according to Jasper County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Jeff Crosby, the office’s spokesman. A delay between reporting and posting on the sheriff’s office social media is not unusual, Crosby said, as investigators were still gathering information before the post was made.

No foul play is suspected, Crosby said, and officials believe that Evans left on her own. Crosby declined to say why investigators believe this, because the investigation is still ongoing.

“Right now, we are just putting out as much information as we can to everybody to see if they’ve had contact with her, or if they know where she is at, or anything,” Crosby said.

The office has tried tracking Evans down through a cell phone and on Facebook, he said. Her last post on the social media platform is from 2019.

Evans, also known as “Red” and “Little bit” to her friends, is outgoing and has spunk, according to her best friend of 15 years, Tiffany Dara.

“She loves music and dance,” Dara said. “She was a backbone for me. When my mom passed away, her and her mom were there for me.”

The last time they spoke, Dara said, Evans was supposed to babysit for her but didn’t show up. Evans last worked as a waitress at Jasper’s Porch, a restaurant in Ridgeland that has now closed, Dara said.

Dara first went to police to report Evans missing in August 2021, but was told they could do only a welfare check, she said. When police went to the house where Dara believed Evans was staying, she said they told her they couldn’t find anything. Dara does not know why the family waited until November 2021 to report Evans missing. She said she suspects Evans’ father filed the report in November because he became alarmed when he recently learned that no one in Ridgeland or Hampton County had heard from his daughter.

“Now I guess he’s worried because if she’s not around Ridgeland or Hampton, she has nobody else,” Dara said. “We have an eerie feeling that something is not right.”

She and Evans were like sisters, she said. It wasn’t like Evans not to post on Facebook or reach out to friends and family. Dara and the father of Evans’ 10-year-old son have a “gut feeling” that she didn’t move away, she said.

“It’s possible, but it’s not like Chasity not to hit anybody up,” Dara said. “We’re really worried.”

Evans’ son, who stays half the time with his father and the other half with Evans’ father, asks about her every day, Dara said.

“Please come home, I love you, no matter what,” Dara said. “We just want to make sure she is OK. Even if she doesn’t want to come home, I just want her to know we all love her.”

Evans has red hair and blue eyes, according to Dara and Crosby. She is 5 feet tall and weighs 110 pounds, Crosby said.

If anyone sees or hears from Evans, they should call the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division at (843) 726-7779 or Crime Stoppers of the Lowcountry at (843) 554-1111.
