Driver dies days after midweek Jasper County crash, Highway Patrol says

One of two drivers involved in a midweek crash in Jasper County died days later, according to a S.C. Highway Patrol spokesperson.

The head-on collision occurred at 1:13 p.m. Wednesday on Lowcountry Drive near Snake Road.

A 2019 Dodge pickup truck was traveling south on Lowcountry Drive while a 2016 Toyota Sedan was traveling north before they collided, lance Cpl. Nick Pye said.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts and transported to the hospital for treatment, but the driver of the Toyota later died from their injuries, Pye said Friday.

The Jasper County Coroner’s Office identified the driver who died as 59-year-old Sonya Davis. The office said Davis died in Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where she was taken after the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol.

There’s been an estimated 896 fatal crashes on South Carolina roadways in 2021, according to data kept by the state’s Department of Public Safety. The statistics say 966 people have died in those crashes to date.
