Man charged with attempted murder after stabbing in Bluffton neighborhood, police say

A 24-year-old man turned himself in to law enforcement Monday and was charged with attempted murder after police accused him of stabbing a man and injuring two others outside a home in Bluffton last week.

Cesar Gonzalez, of Bluffton, also faces two counts of first-degree assault and battery and one count of possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center jail log.

The charges stem from a stabbing incident that took place around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday outside a home on Sandy Pointe Drive, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Maj. Bob Bromage.

One man “sustained numerous stab wounds” and was transported to Savannah Memorial Hospital for treatment and later released, Bromage said. Two of his family members were also injured while trying to stop the altercation.

Bromage declined to say how, or if, Gonzalez and the man knew each other, citing the open investigation. Bromage said no additional arrests are expected at this point.

First-degree assault and battery is a felony that is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, according to state law. Attempted murder is also a felony and, if convicted, Gonzalez could face up to 30 years in prison.

As of Monday afternoon, an attorney for Gonzalez was not yet listed in online court documents, and he remained incarcerated in the Beaufort County Detention Center.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
