One man hospitalized after Tuesday night shooting at Beaufort intersection, police say
Police are investigating a shooting at a Beaufort intersection Tuesday night after a man was shot and drove himself to the hospital.
Officers from the Beaufort Police Department responded to Rodgers Street in Beaufort after receiving multiple calls for shots fired around 7:22 p.m., according to a police report. Residents told police they heard shots fired on Bladen Street, Washington Street and Hamar Street near Beaufort Elementary School.
One man was shot while in his car at the intersection of Washington and Wilmington Street, police said in the report. The man drove himself to Beaufort Memorial Hospital and was later transported by ambulance to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Beaufort Police Department spokesperson Capt. George Erdel said. Officers responded to the hospital to “secure the victim’s vehicle” and talk to the man’s family, Erdel said.
There was no indication of shots fired at Beaufort Memorial Hospital Tuesday. “We were not investigating a shooting that occurred at the hospital,” Erdel said. “We were investigating a shooting, and the victim went to the hospital.”
The man’s injuries are serious, but not life-threatening, Erdel said. At least 15 shell casings were recovered from the intersection, police said in the report.
The investigation is ongoing, and no arrests have been made as of Wednesday afternoon, Erdel said.
