Police investigate report that ‘mob’ jumped teen Saturday after birthday party on St. Helena

The mother of a 13-year-old girl reported to police on Monday that a mob of 27 people jumped her daughter after her birthday party Saturday evening at St. Helena Park.

The teen, the mother said, was celebrating her birthday with her 15-year-old brother. The mother said she didn’t know seven of the girls, one as young as 12, who came to the party, according to the report filed by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Around 7 p.m., after most guests had left, five cars pulled into the park, and “approximately 20 people got out,” the mother told police. She estimated at least six adults and 14 minors. The seven girls she didn’t know who had been at the party then attacked her daughter, and the 20 people joined in, she told police.

The mother told police that she and her son tried to help her daughter, but during the fight, a man pulled a gun on the son. The mother, who said she did not know the people or why they were attacking her daughter, had scrapes on the side of her head, forearm and legs, according to the report. The report does not mention injuries to the 13-year-old girl.

A 12-year-old at the party also had a “busted lip,” police wrote. The mother of the 12-year-old told police she did not report the assault Saturday because she wanted to see if she could find out who was involved before calling the police, the report said.

Someone called Saturday night to report the fight, but when deputies arrived, they found the park empty, the report said.

About 10:30 a.m. Monday, the mothers told a Lady’s Island Middle School resource officer about the attack. The school police officer then called the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, the report said.

The investigation is ongoing, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Maj. Bob Bromage. No arrests have been made, he said.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers of Lowcountry at (843) 554-1111.
