Autopsy scheduled for man found dead Monday in Hilton Head’s Coligny area, police say

An unidentified adult male was found dead Monday morning in a neighborhood near Coligny Beach on Hilton Head Island, according to police.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office is investigating it as a “suspicious death,” according to Maj. Bob Bromage.

The agency received a call around 10 a.m. that a landscaper found a body in a wooded area near Woodhaven Drive off Pope Avenue, he said.

Sheriff’s Office investigators and the crime scene unit interviewed witnesses and collected forensic evidence.

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office has not yet identified the man, but an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday at the Medical University of South Carolina, according to a Tuesday night news release.

The autopsy is expected to aid in the determination of the deceased man’s identity, as well as his cause and manner of death.

The investigation into the man’s death is ongoing.
