Vehicle strikes pedestrian on 278 in Bluffton on Saturday night, police say

A vehicle struck a pedestrian crossing U.S. 278 on Saturday night in Bluffton, police said.

A person crossing the highway at the intersection of 278 and Simmonsville Road was hit by a vehicle traveling westbound at about 9 p.m., Bluffton Police Department Capt. Joe Babkiewicz said. The person was taken by ambulance to Coastal Carolina Hospital, Babkiewicz said.

Babkiewicz referred a question about the person’s condition to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office. A message for Coroner Ed Allen wasn’t immediately returned Sunday morning.

An accident reconstruction team was assembled and the incident is under investigation, Babkiewicz said. No other details were immediately available.

This is a developing story and will be updated.
