Beaufort man accused of stabbing a man multiple times in Spanish Moss Trail parking lot

A Beaufort man was charged with attempted murder stemming from an Aug. 16 stabbing in a Spanish Moss Trail parking lot, according to Port Royal police.

Katus Powell, 40, of Beaufort faces one count of attempted murder and one count of possession of a knife in a violent crime, according to court records.

Around 4 a.m. on Aug. 16, Powell drove into the parking lot off Westvine Drive for the Spanish Moss Trail, police said.

He got into an argument with another man there and “then stabbed him multiple times in the chest and right hand,” according to a report from the Port Royal Police Department.

The man has since recovered after being treated at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, said Maj. Ron Wekenmann.

After obtaining warrants, S.C. Law Enforcement Division and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office assisted Port Royal in finding Powell, the report said.

He was arrested in Hardeeville and charged Wednesday by Port Royal Police, the agency said.

Powell is detained in the Beaufort County Detention Center. His bond has not been set, according to jail and court records.

Attempted murder, a felony, carries a penalty of up to 30 years in prison, S.C. law states.

When we publish mugshots

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette publishes police booking photos, or mugshots, in the following instances:

  • In situations where a public figure or someone in a position of public trust is arrested
  • In cases where there is an immediate and widespread threat to public safety
  • In cases where the arrested person is accused of a crime reporters have evidence to believe involved numerous, unknown victims

Reporters will avoid using mugshots as lead images for online articles in order to limit their circulation on social media, except in cases where the public is served by the immediate identification of the accused. Reporters and editors may use discretion in situations that don’t meet the criteria outlined in this policy but still present a compelling reason to publish a mugshot.
