Rifle stolen from Beaufort Co. deputy’s patrol car. He may be disciplined, officials say

A Beaufort County Sheriff’s deputy is facing potential disciplinary action after his patrol car was broken into in Bluffton and his rifle stolen, according to authorities.

“Unknown subjects” broke a window of the deputy’s patrol car in the Alston Park neighborhood of Bluffton on Friday morning and took his patrol rifle “which was not properly secured,” according to a release from the Sheriff’s Office.

“A command staff inquiry into the incident is being conducted and, upon its completion, recommendations for disciplinary action for policy violation will be forwarded to the Chief Deputy and Sheriff for their review,” said the release.

As of 12:50 p.m., a suspect hadn’t been identified nor the rifle found.

The Bluffton Police Department is assisting in the investigation of the vehicle break-in.
