Beaufort-area man charged in July 3 shooting where a man was shot twice, police say

A Burton man was charged in a Beaufort shooting from three weeks ago in which police said a man was shot twice.

The Beaufort Police Department charged Winston Fields, 46, of Burton on Saturday with one count of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. A conviction carries up to 20 years in prison.

Shortly after 9 p.m. on July 3, an officer went to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he met a victim who said Fields shot him on Washington Street in Beaufort after an argument, according to a Beaufort Police report.

The victim told the officer he turned and walked away from Fields, and then was shot once in the right leg and once in the buttocks, the report said.

On Saturday, an off-duty Beaufort police officer spotted Fields on a scooter after 3 p.m. and alerted authorities, according to the report.

Fields was arrested at a gas station on Boundary Street and transported to the Beaufort County Detention Center.

He was released on personal recognizance on Sunday, according to court records.
