Daufuskie Island man charged; police say he used peephole into women’s restroom near marina
A Daufuskie Island man was charged with using a peephole to spy on people using the public women’s restroom near a boat marina, according to police.
The 43-year-old man was charged with public disorderly conduct and voyeurism on Sunday evening, according to the Beaufort County Detention Center jail log.
Beaufort County Sheriff’s deputies were on Daufuskie Island and patrolling the Freeport Marina on Sunday afternoon when they watched the man flee from a nearby business on a golf cart, according to Maj. Bob Bromage.
Shortly after, a woman reported to deputies that the man “had been looking through a hole between the male and female bathrooms” and was holding his phone up to the peephole, according to Bromage.
He said deputies found the man later and brought him to the Sheriff’s Office substation on Hilton Head to be interviewed. He was subsequently charged with voyeurism.
A first offense of voyeurism is a misdemeanor. A conviction can result in up to three years in prison, S.C. law states.
The Island Packet does not name those charged with misdemeanors unless they are in a position of authority or public trust.
He is still detained, and his bond has not yet been set, jail records show.
