39-year-old woman dies after falling off golf cart on Fripp Island, coroner says

A 39-year-old Fort Mill, S.C., woman died Thursday evening at a Savannah hospital after a fall from a golf cart on Fripp Island earlier in the day, according to the Beaufort County Coroner’s Office.

Melanie Popjes died at Memorial University Medical Center just after 5 pm., according to Coroner Ed Allen.

Popjes was injured about 10 a.m. on Tarpon Boulevard on Fripp Island after she and her child fell from the cart into the roadway, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Bob Bromage.

The child was treated at Beaufort Memorial Hospital for minor injuries, while Popjes was flown to the Savannah hospital.

There will be no autopsy performed. Allen said the cause of death was due to blunt head trauma.
