Massive fire engulfs building near Talmadge Bridge; U.S. 17 lanes now open, police say

UPDATE: The Talmadge Bridge and traffic lanes on U.S. 17 have reopened after firefighters doused the flaming building this afternoon, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. Firefighters remained on the scene at 4:30 a.m..

A massive fire engulfed an unoccupied building near the Talmadge Bridge, causing closures of the Savannah side of the bridge and southbound traffic on U.S. 17, according to authorities.

The two-story building is a former fireworks shop, and multiple agencies worked to put out the flames, according to Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Det. Sgt. Jake Higgins.

He said police closed down traffic on U.S. 17 heading south near the intersection of S.C. 315 by Alligator Alley. The Savannah side of the Talmadge Bridge was also closed to traffic, he said.

As of 4:30 p.m., all traffic lanes were open again. Firefighters remained on the scene to put out hot sports, according to the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office.
