Jasper Co. teen in critical condition after being shot in the head while asleep, police say
A 15-year-old boy in Jasper County is in critical condition after being shot in the head in a drive-by shooting while he slept in his home, according to authorities.
Several shots were fired in the drive-by shooting after 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning at a home in Pineland, resulting in M’Kai Brown, 15, hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head, according to Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Det. Sgt. Jake Higgins.
Family members told police that Brown “was sleeping in his bed when the shots began entering the house,” according to the Sheriff’s Office.
He was flown to Memorial Health Medical Center in Savannah, where he remains in critical condition in the intensive care unit, said Higgins.
As of Friday, Brown was still in the ICU, he said.
“Over the last few days he has made some positive progress towards recovery. M’Kai has a long road to recovery,” according to a post on the Sheriff’s Office Facebook page on Friday.
“His family is grateful for all of your prayers and ask that you continue them during this journey. His mom is by his side every day,” it said.
Higgins said this shooting is linked to two others this month on the same street, Gillison Branch Road.
The Sheriff’s Office has people of interest in Wednesday morning’s shooting, said Higgins.
“No person should have to fear ... they’re going to lose their life in their own home,” said Higgins. “He’s a great young man. He deserves to be alive and be healthy.”
