Air, water search off Hilton Head wraps up after unfounded report of missing person

A search has concluded off a beach near a Hilton Head Island resort where officials were scanning the water by boat and helicopter after an unfounded report of a person missing at sea late Tuesday afternoon, according to authorities.

As of 6:45 p.m., no one had been reported missing to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, according to Maj. Bob Bromage.

A few hours earlier, a lifeguard “reported seeing a person go underwater and not resurface in the ocean near the Sonesta Resort,” a Sheriff’s Office release said.

Six agencies responded to search the area by boat and by helicopter: the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue, the Beaufort Marine Rescue Squadron, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources, the U.S. Coast Guard and Hilton Head Island Shore Beach Services.

No one was located in the area, according to the release, and the search ended at 5:30 p.m.
