Bluffton woman who died in Jasper Co. crash was on her way to church, officials say
A Bluffton woman has died and another person remains hospitalized after a head-on crash Sunday morning near Hardeeville, according to authorities.
Josephine Rocca, 82, died close to noon on Sunday at Memorial Health Medical Center in Savannah, from injuries resulting from a crash on S.C. 46 earlier that morning, according to Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls.
Sauls said Rocca was on her way to church in Hardeeville.
At 9:50 a.m., Rocca and another driver crashed head-on on Plantation Drive, according to S.C. Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins. Both drivers were wearing seat belts, he said.
The crash is under investigation, according to Collins.
Firefighters arrived at the intersection of Jenkins Drive shortly after and found both vehicles on fire and one person trapped inside their car, according to Jasper County Rescue Fire District Lt. Garrett Lucas.
That person was extricated, Lucas said.
