Man shot in hand by stray bullet while lighting fireworks on Hilton Head, police say

A man on Hilton Head was struck by a stray bullet as he set off fireworks Saturday, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

The man was at a friends house off Wild Horse Road at around 10:30 p.m. on July 4,when he “suddenly grabbed his hand in pain” and began bleeding, according to the report.

EMS personnel arrived shortly after and determined the victim was shot after finding an “entry and exit wound,” the report said.

Deputies did not recover a bullet on the scene, it said.

The man’s friends wrapped his wound in a T-shirt until EMS arrived. He was later transported to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah for treatment.

Sheriff’s Office Maj. Bob Bromage said the incident is under investigation.
