Bluffton police and fire officials cleared the scene of a gas leak Friday that closed both lanes of S.C. 170 in the Evan Way area of Okatie. Those lanes reopened about 10 p.m.

The leak was caused when a tree fell on a gas main, Bluffton Police spokesperson Capt. Joe Babkiewicz said Saturday morning.

A Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office alert was sent at 5:42 p.m. Friday asking motorists to avoid the area and seek alternate routes. Another alert was sent at 8:23 p.m. saying the area was still closed off.

While some social media posts reported that neighborhoods were being evacuated, that was not the case, Babkiewicz said.
