Fire at popular Savannah restaurant early Friday caused heavy smoke, charred buildings
A fire originating in a popular Savannah restaurant’s kitchen sent plumes of smoke billowing and spread to neighboring businesses in an early Friday morning blaze.
Around 12:30 a.m., the Savannah Fire Department arrived at the The Public Kitchen & Bar on Liberty and Bull Street and discovered “heavy smoke streaming from the building,” according to Jenel Few, public information officer.
Firefighters “acted quickly to extinguish the fire,” and there were no injuries. None of the buildings was open or occupied when the fire started.
The neighboring Artillery bar, a former armory originally built in 1896, had minor smoke damage, according to Few.
The flames started in the Public’s basement kitchen and was likely caused by an electrical fire stemming from a chiller table, she said.
The fire then fanned out to the rear of the building and charred the exterior balcony of the nearby Knights of Columbus building, said Few.
The full extent of the damage to the Public is not known at this time,.
