Responders put out the flames at 2:02 a.m., after it began in the backyard, consumed the patio’s covering and spread into the kitchen, said Joheida Fister, fire marshal for the Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division.

Everyone had safely left the home by the time firefighters arrived, she said. Four fire engines, two medics, one ladder truck, the battalion chief, and a host of other law enforcement officials were on the scene.
Fister said the roof to the patio was consumed by the flames. The fire then spread into the kitchen, where firefighter were able to halt its progress.
The patio, kitchen, and back wall of the house sustained fire damage, she said. Soot filled the first floor.
Fire crews were given the all-clear to leave around 9 a.m. Friday morning.
