Hilton Head man, 21, dead after Friday night shooting at Sandalwood Terrace apartment

A 21-year-old Hilton Head Island man was shot to death Friday following a fight at Sandalwood Terrace apartments on the island’s north end, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office. The incident left a second man wounded.

Shamar Anderson was killed after a physical altercation in an apartment around 10 p.m. No one has been charged and the incident remains under investigation, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call of shots fired at Sandalwood Terrace and found Anderson lying on the floor with gunshot wounds, the release said.

He was transported to Hilton Head Hospital by ambulance, the release said.

Callers said they heard gunshots and saw a black sedan speed out of the apartment complex just afterward, according to the release.

While EMS transported Anderson to the hospital, deputies stopped the black sedan, which was heading toward the hospital.

The man driving the vehicle, who has not been identified, had gunshot wounds from the altercation at Sandalwood Terrace and was driving to the hospital to seek treatment, spokesperson Maj. Bob Bromage told The Island Packet.

The driver was transported to the hospital by ambulance. He was transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, treated for his wounds and released, according to the release.

Anderson was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived at the island hospital.

The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office will schedule a forensic autopsy at the Medical University of South Carolina to confirm Anderson’s cause of death, the release said.

Overnight, Sheriff’s Office investigators interviewed witnesses and processed the Sandalwood Terrace scene for forensic evidence.

Several nearby neighbors took to social media to post about the gunfire and police presence in Sandalwood Terrace.
