Police investigating after car found in flames on Beaufort area basketball court

Burton firefighters extinguished a flaming vehicle after midnight on Friday in the Seabrook area of Burton.

Firefighters discovered a Hyundai Genesis in flames on a basketball court on Seabrook Center Road, according to the Burton Fire District Capt. Daniel Byrne.

Byrne said firefighters were called to the scene at 12:20 a.m. and sent two fire engines and a fire SUV.

The vehicle fire on Seabrook Road is currently under investigation. The Hyundai Genesis was heavily damaged and no firefighters were injured in the process on April 17.

The fire was doused and the scene cleared at 1:19 a.m., Byrne said.

Because the vehicle was discovered on a basketball court and no owner was in sight, he said the fire was “deemed suspicious.” The car was turned over to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident is still under investigation, according to Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Bob Bromage.
