3 Beaufort County men charged with murder in fatal gas station shootout 10 months later

Three Beaufort County men have been charged with killing a 20 year old during a gas station shootout on Lady’s Island last summer, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

Two men were shot in the parking lot of the Circle K gas station on Sea Island Parkway around 9 p.m. June 3, according to previous reporting. Clarence Mitchell III, 20, of St. Helena, died in the shooting. A second man was treated for injuries at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

During the investigation, deputies learned that the occupants of at least two vehicles exchanged “a large volume of gunfire.” Deputies found more than 70 cartridge casings from different guns, according to a Sheriff’s Office news release.

Last week, deputies learned new information in the case and were able to obtain arrest warrants for the three men.
