71-year-old bicyclist dies after being hit by a truck on Hilton Head, police say

A 71-year-old Buffalo, New York, man died Saturday when he fell off his bike in a Hilton Head Island crosswalk and then was struck by a truck, S.C. Highway Patrol and Beaufort County Coroner’s officials say.

Charles Kistner died after being transported to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah by helicopter with serious injuries.

The driver of the 2017 Ford F-250 pick-up truck was charged with disregarding a stop sign and having no driver’s license, a Highway Patrol media release says.

Kistner was riding his bicycle when he fell in the intersection of Gum Tree Road and Katie Miller Drive on the island’s north end.

He was lying in the crosswalk of Katie Miller Drive when the pickup truck approached the intersection and struck him, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Maj. Bob Bromage said Saturday.

The truck was hauling a piece of machinery, Bromage said. The details of the incident came from a witness to the crash.

Kistner was wearing a helmet, and the pick-up truck driver wore a seat belt, the Highway Patrol release says.
