Police investigating 3 recent Hilton Head shootings for possible connections

Three apparent drive-by shootings on Hilton Head in less than a week — two at the same apartment complex —have neighbors fearing for their safety and the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office investigating possible connections.

Someone shot at least 10 times at one building at Bridgetown Apartments off Marshland Road around 10:45 p.m Monday, according to a Sheriff’s Office report and first reported by WSAV. No one was injured, but multiple bullet holes were found in the exterior of one apartment.

Three nights later, around the same time, residents reported hearing gun shots in the roadway near Bridgetown, according to Maj. Bob Bromage, Sheriff’s Office spokesperson.

As of Friday morning, no damage has been discovered at any apartment from Thursday night’s shooting, Bromage said.

He said the Sheriff’s Office is investigating whether there are any connections in the shootings.

Days before the two shootings at Bridgetown Apartments, the Sheriff’s Office received a call that shots had been fired about 5 p.m. Feb. 7 on Squire Pope Road. A home on the street had been shot multiple times, and a car parked in front had one bullet hole in its back window, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. No one was injured.

Tamberly Thompson said she has lived on Hilton Head for 30 years, the past three at Bridgetown Apartments.

“We were shocked,” Thompson told The Island Packet Thursday. “We are still shocked. I have never felt insecure in my home, and I don’t want to.”

She said she walks her dog near the building that was shot, and that minutes before the shooting, her roommate had walked from her car to their apartment.

Although a specific apartment appears to be targeted, Thompson said she’s worried a bystander will get shot.

Mark Megliore with High Tide Associates, the property management for Bridgetown Apartments, said Monday’s incident is the first report he’s heard of shootings.

He said the resident was right to call police, and he encouraged residents to call police — and then property management — if they see anything suspicious.
