Charges dismissed in crash that injured pedestrian near Sea Pines Circle, lawyer says

Charges were dismissed against a man accused of leaving the scene of an accident where a pedestrian was injured near Sea Pines Circle on Hilton Head, according to the man’s lawyer.

Taylor James Schumacher, of Penfield, N.Y., was charged in July with leaving the scene of an accident that involved great bodily injury — a felony, the S.C. Highway Patrol reported at the time.

Schumacher was accused of driving a 2016 Chevrolet pick-up truck that hit a 54-year-old man July 6, according to The Island Packet. The Highway Patrol said the pedestrian was illegally crossing Palmetto Bay Road at the time of the accident, around 10:55 p.m., in an area described as “dark with street lights.”

The pedestrian was severely injured and airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, The Packet reported.

Charges were dismissed July 26 at a preliminary hearing, according to documents provided Thursday by William G. Jenkins Jr., Schumacher’s lawyer.

The documents show the criminal charges were expunged in November. Expunged records are required to be destroyed and will no longer appear in the Judicial Circuit’s system.

Jeff Kidd, spokesman for the 14th Judicial Circuit Solicitor’s Office, could not confirm details about Schumacher’s case. There are no records pertaining to the case, Kidd said.
