Multiple people detained at Beaufort and Battery Creek basketball game, officials say

Multiple people were detained at Battery Creek High School Saturday night when a fight erupted in the stands of a basketball game against Beaufort High School, school and police officials said Sunday.

Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, Beaufort Police Department and S.C. Highway Patrol responded to the school about 9 p.m., Maj. Bob Bromage said Sunday.

Three juveniles and one adult were detained, he said. He said the adult was arrested in the parking lot for public disorder.

No one was injured during the incident, Bromage said.

Beaufort School District Director of Communications Jim Foster said the fight broke out among fans and school administrators helped break-up the fight.

Bromage and Foster both said there is no evidence that Saturday’s fight is related to any other recent events in the district.

This includes rumors of a “retaliation shooting” at a Beaufort High School and Hilton Head High School basketball game on January 17.

The Sheriff’s Office conducted proactive patrols of Beaufort High School during the January game because of the rumors, a police report says.

No other details were available Sunday about Saturday’s fight.

Bromage said the Sheriff’s Office was continued to investigate the incident.
