A Beaufort Police officer was arrested on DUI charge Sunday. He no longer works there
An officer with the Beaufort Police Department was fired Monday after being arrested the day before on a drunken-driving charge, according to a department spokesperson.
Anthony Laurens Turner, 24, was booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center for DUI at 7 a.m. Sunday and was released about two hours later, according to the jail log. No bond information was available online Thursday morning.
Turner was suspended from the department on the day of his arrest and then fired Monday, Beaufort Police spokesperson Capt. George Erdel told The Island Packet Thursday morning.
Turner was hired by the Beaufort Police in June 2018 after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, Erdel said. He had no previous law enforcement experience.
He was arrested by S.C. Highway Patrol after his 2011 Nissan crashed on Broad River Boulevard near Castle Rock Road in the Beaufort area, according to Highway Patrol spokesperson Lance Cpl. Matt Southern. No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
Around 4:20 a.m., Turner was driving east on Broad River Boulevard when the car ran off the left side of the road and struck several small trees, Southern said.
Turner, the only person in the car, submitted to a breathalyzer test and registered 0.10%. He was then booked into the jail on the DUI charge.
