23-year-old Ridgeland man killed, 2 hurt during shooting at birthday party, police say
One person was killed and two injured as bullets rang out early Sunday morning at a Jasper County birthday party event attended by more than 100 people, officials say.
Kevon Williams Jr., 23, of Ridgeland was killed during the 1:30 a.m. shooting at Black Presidents Motorcycle Club — located just outside Yemassee town limits.
No on has been arrested for the shooting , Jasper County Sheriff’s Office Det. Sgt. Jake Higgins said Sunday afternoon.
“There is an active investigation with many moving parts and we are giving our best,” Sheriff Chris Malphrus said in a news release. “My heart is heavy for Kevon’s family and I ask that you pray for them and the many who witnessed this terrible crime.”
Higgins said two Sheriff’s Office deputies were working on special duty at the club when the shooting happened. He said the deputies are often paid to staff special events at the club.
One of the deputies was assisting on a major car accident nearby when the first shots were fired, Higgins said. The second deputy ran into the club and immediately started providing CPR to Williams.
She called for assistance, and the deputy returned from the car crash, Higgins said.
As both deputies responded, a second round of shots started from outside the club.
“Bullets were coming through the walls of the club from outside,” Higgins said. “They tried to give cover to the people there and called for more help.”
The shooting stopped as backup arrived, Higgins said.
Yemassee Police Department also responded, officials say.
A man and woman received gunshot wounds and were treated at Beaufort Memorial and Coastal Carolina hospitals, Higgins said. He said they are expected to recover.
Williams was transported to Beaufort Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead several hours after the shooting.
Anyone with video or information about the incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at 843-726-7519, or for anonymous tips call 843-717-4100.
“We appreciate the community’s help and our prayers go out to the family affected,” Higgins said.
