Man wanted in Delaware child’s rape in 2011 arrested in Beaufort County, police say

A man accused of raping a child in Delaware almost 10 years ago was arrested Thursday in Beaufort County, according to a news release from the Dover Police Department.

Juan Carlos Hernandez, 34, who has been wanted for second-degree rape of a minor since October 2018, was taken into custody by federal authorities.

In March 2011, a 6-year-old child told a school therapist that Hernandez raped her, the release said. Police investigated the allegations and eventually obtained an arrest warrant for Hernandez.

Hernandez’s location was unknown at the time, though, and it was believed he could have returned to Mexico since he is not a U.S. resident. The FBI contacted the Dover Police Department and U.S. Marshal’s First State Fugitive Task Force with a tip that he was in Beaufort County on New Year’s Eve.

Hernandez was awaiting extradition to Delaware as of Friday, the news release said.
