NC woman’s ashes washed up on a Hilton Head beach, police report says. What happened?

You never know what you’ll find on Hilton Head Island beaches.

We’ve had thousands of dead jellyfish pile up on the shore. We’ve seen dead whales, sharks, and even strange blobs that looked like brains. And we can’t forget Hilton Head’s best beach treasure ever — the big red buoy.

Last Wednesday, a woman called police to Palmetto Dunes Beach on Hilton Head Island when she stumbled upon a plastic bag filled with gray ashes near the shoreline, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

Deputies realized the bag contained human remains and contacted a funeral home to identify remains from the ID tag, the report said.

The remains were those of a 37-year-old Charlotte woman who died in August.

A deputy contacted the woman’s mother, who lives in Goose Creek. The mother told police her daughter’s boyfriend took possession of the cremated ashes and “was to scatter them in the ocean.”

Apparently, he forgot to open the bag as he was doing this.

The woman’s cremains were still intact, months after being in the ocean, according to the report.

The mother told police she would come by the Sheriff’s Office to take the remains.

In September, a woman’s remains were found in Georgia in a bottle with a note attached asking those who find the bottle not to open it, but to take a photo of the bottle, throw it back in the water, and let her travel the world, McClatchy reported.

Last year, a mysterious urn filled with unidentified remains washed up on Myrtle Beach shores, the Sun News reported.
