A Bluffton man returning home from an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting Monday night was charged with driving under the influence and driving without a license after he drove his car into a ditch off Buck Island Road, according to a Bluffton Police Department report.

When officers approached the driver, he was unable to formulate a full sentence, slurred his words, and his eyes were red and “glossy.” EMS tried to evaluate the driver, but he refused, the report said.

The driver’s wife arrived and told officers her husband went to an AA meeting on Buckwalter Parkway and his driver’s license had been suspended previously for driving under the influence, the report said.

The driver refused to take a sobriety test, the report said.

He was arrested and booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center and was still detained Tuesday afternoon, according to the jail log.
