Police arrest Beaufort Co. man walking in neighborhood firing a shotgun, police say

A man was arrested Wednesday for possession of a firearm by a felon after multiple people called the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office saying he was firing a shotgun.

One caller said police had responded to the area the day before because the man was shooting a gun at that time as well.

Multiple witnesses identified the man as someone who lived on Murray Road.

During an interview with detectives, the man said he saw a raccoon in his trash. He told police he remembered his uncle had a shotgun and went in to retrieve it.

The man told police he shot twice at the raccoon — now in a tree. The first shot was a miss but the second shot hit the animal.

The man burred the raccoon, he told police, and then asked a friend to come and get the gun.
