A Bluffton man wanted on a charge of inflicting great bodily injury on a child turned himself in Thursday evening.

Derek Porter Jr., 24, is accused of abusing a 2-year-old child who was brought to Hilton Head Island Hospital on Dec. 13. The incident happened at a Lakes at Edgewater home in Bluffton, according to a heavily-redacted Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

The child suffered second-degree burns on his feet, the report said.

Porter turned himself in to deputies at a Bluffton gas station and was booked into the Beaufort County Detention Center around 7 p.m.

The Sheriff’s Office sent a news release announcing he was wanted on Wednesday.

According to jail and Beaufort County Court records, Porter remained confined as of Friday morning and was assigned a $50,000 bond.
