Report: Hilton Head woman drives on sidewalk. Goes directly to jail.

A woman was charged with driving under the influence Friday evening on Hilton Head Island after she allegedly drove onto a sidewalk and called a deputy a few choice names.

A Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputy saw a dark station wagon traveling west on William Hilton Parkway near Singleton Beach Road around 6:50 p.m. without its rear lights on, according to a Sheriff’s Office report. When the deputy drove alongside of the car to signal the driver about the lights, he saw a woman leaning forward “extremely close” to the steering wheel. When the driver didn’t notice him, the deputy attempted to pull her over.

When the deputy turned his lights on, the vehicle failed to slow down or give any indication of stopping, the report said. As the deputy followed, the station wagon weaved in its lane “multiple times” before crossing to the left lane. It eventually pulled to the right, striking the curb and drove onto the sidewalk where it continued for several feet, the report said.

When the vehicle stopped, the deputy knocked on the passenger side front window and announced himself to the driver, who seemed “confused.” She made several attempts to lower the window before saying she was “fine.”

The deputy told the woman she struck a curb, and she “seemed indignant” that the deputy had made the accusation. The deputy asked the woman to provide her license and registration. After several attempts to get that information from the woman, she said she didn’t remember what the deputy asked for.

She also said she did not have anything to drink, though the deputy noted slurred speech and a smell of alcohol.

Another deputy arrived and the officers gave the woman a field sobriety test. The woman was allegedly unsteady on her feet and almost fell at one point.

As she was placed under arrested for DUI, the woman became “verbally abusive” toward one deputy. She called the deputy a “d---wad” and told him not to “f------ touch her,” the report said. She also told the deputy he was “a f------ a------,” the report said.

The woman was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center .
