Hilton Head man arrested for trying to ‘go for a steam’ at the Sea Pines clubhouse at 2 a.m.
A Hilton Head Island man was charged for driving under the influence after allegedly blowing past the front gate of Sea Pines on his way to a 2 a.m. steam session.
A Sheriff’s deputy responded to a traffic stop conducted by Sea Pines Security at about 2 a.m. Saturday on Greenwood Drive, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.
The security officer told the deputy that the driver of the vehicle, who was believed to be under the influence, went by the front gate without stopping.
When the deputy instructed the man to step out of his vehicle, “he appeared very shaky.”
The deputy asked the man where he was coming from and where he was going to. In response to both questions, the man said “Sea Pines Center”.
When asked why he was going to Sea Pines Center, the man said he was “going for a steam at the clubhouse,” the report said.
The man denied drinking any alcohol earlier in the night. But he explained to the deputy he smelled like alcohol because “someone must have spilled beer on him while he was playing ‘beer pong at a party earlier,’” the report said.
The deputy administered a series of sobriety tests, in which the man failed nearly all of them.
He was then taken to the Sheriff’s Office on Hilton Head where he refused to provide a breath sample.
