Hilton Head man saw someone driving his old truck. An argument and gunshots followed

A man told Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office deputies he got into a heated argument with someone driving his old truck and that the driver pulled a gun and took a shot at him.

Then five more.

Deputies responded at 5:42 p.m. Saturday to the incident at Southwood Park Drive on Hilton Head Island, according to a deputy’s report.

Investigators found five shell casings in the road and another nearby, according to the report. And one deputy who was responding to another incident nearby — before the man called 911 — heard gunfire, a total of five shots, in “rapid succession.”

The man said he saw his old truck, a gray, four-door GMC Sierra, and a woman he knew riding in it. He saw she was not driving so he started yelling at her and the driver, asking, “‘(W)hy is he driving my truck?’” according to the report.

The man said the suspect got out of the truck and started yelling at him. Then, according to the man, the suspect — who was standing in the road, the curve near St. Francis Thrift Shop — pulled out a gun and fired one shot in his direction.

The suspect then started to drive away, according to the report.

But the man continued to yell, and the suspect came to a quick stop, got out of the truck and fired five more shots at him.

The man described the suspect as a black male between 6’2” and 6’5” inches tall, and weighing between 240 to 280 pounds.

The man said he did not know the suspect.
