Bluffton man scammed out of $6,000 by ‘swindling’ fake Better Business Bureau employee
A Bluffton man reported that $6,000 was taken from his bank accounts Tuesday after he had several phone conversations with a man who claimed to be a Better Business Bureau employee.
According to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report, the victim reported the theft from his Rose Hill Plantation Home.
The man told a deputy that he was called around 9:30 a.m. by a man who identified himself as “Robby White” with the Better Business Bureau.
“White” provided the man with his employee number and told him that his identity had been stolen and that money had been taken out of his account on two separate occasions. “White” also said that the transactions would not be viewable to the victim, but that he would refund the money into his bank accounts.
All he needed were a couple of things.
First, “White” asked the man to purchase a $3,000 gift card from Walmart and provide him with the gift card number.
“White” then instructed the man to buy another $3,000 gift card. The victim once again agreed and provided White with the gift card number.
“(The victim) stated that he was worried he had been swindled and decided to notify authorities,” a deputy wrote in the report.
