Hilton Head Houdini: DUI suspect twice escapes cuffs, police say

A Hilton Head Island woman arrested early Sunday morning on charges of driving under the influence and marijuana possession reportedly did her best Houdini impression in the back of Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office patrol car.

The woman — initially pulled over by deputies for an alleged traffic violation near the island’s Delander Court area — was able to twice free herself from handcuffs while detained in the vehicle, according to a sheriff’s office report released Monday.

She accomplished the feat despite the fact that the cuffs “were as tight as they are designed to be,” the report said.

Prior to the attempted escape act, the woman was reportedly asked by a deputy to provide her vehicle registration. Instead, she handed the deputy “her birth certificate, stating it was the ‘certificate for her car,’” according to the report.

In addition to suspecting the woman was driving under the influence, police discovered a glass pipe in her vehicle along with a small amount of suspected marijuana, the report said.

In terms of handcuffing the woman, the third time was a charm and she was successfully transported to jail, according to the report.
