Found sitting in a Hilton Head road, drunken man tells deputies he lived ‘right here’
A man was charged with public disorderly conduct early Saturday morning after he was found sitting in the middle of Hilton Head Island road, and could offer no explanation as to why.
Deputies responded to the Union Cemetery and Dillon roads area around 5:45 a.m. after an unconscious man was reported in the roadway, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.
When they arrived, they found the man standing on the side of Dillon Road talking with paramedics. The paramedics told a deputy they found a vehicle blocking the eastbound side of the road and saw a man sitting on the ground in front of it.
The man told a deputy that he was sitting on the side of the roadway and not on it, and when asked where he lived, he replied “right here,” but offered no explanation of where “here” was, the report said.
“While I spoke with (the man), he looked up into the trees and yelled for family or someone to come and take him home,” a deputy wrote in the report.
He denied drinking alcohol or being under the influence of drugs, but spoke with slurred speak, had bloodshot eyes and had the stench of alcohol about him, the report said. The man was also unsteady on his feet and fell backwards over his bicycle while speaking with a deputy.
The man also claimed that his family lived in a nearby closed business.
He was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center and, as he was being driven, there, told a deputy he consumed a half a pint of gin prior to being on the road and that he was “fine,” the report said.
