A man says he was walking on Coligny Beach on Hilton Head Island about 12:30 a.m. Wednesday when two men he didn’t know shouted racial slurs at him before kicking, punching and strangling him, according to Beaufort County Sheriffs Office police records.

Two men called the man “A Mexican” and a “beaner” as he walked past them sitting on a bench at the beach, the man said in the report. The man said he turned to confront the men but was pushed to the ground instead.

The man told the police that the suspects mentioned being from New York and that they were “Crips” during the attack.

Deputies were unable to locate anyone matching the description of the suspects after arriving at the scene, according to the report. Photographs of the man’s injuries were taken before he was transported to the emergency room by EMS, the report states.

A friend walking with the man corroborated his story, the report states. The report also notes that the victim smelled of alcohol and called police about 30 minutes after the attack.
