‘I should just hit you right there,’ man says to deputy outside Hilton Head plaza

A man was charged with public disorderly conduct early Sunday morning on Hilton Head Island after he allegedly threatened to throw a beer bottle at a deputy’s groin.

The arrest happened around 2:30 a.m. near Reilley’s Plaza on Greenwood Drive, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

Two deputies on foot patrol came across the man who they observed to be “grossly intoxicated,” the report said. The man asked if it was ok if he threw an empty beer bottle into some nearby bushes.

When the deputies told him to throw it away in a trash can, the man replied, “I should just hit you right there,” and gestured in the direction of one of the deputy’s groin, the report said.

The deputy then asked the man to speak with him and, as the man turned around, he spat on the deputy’s leg.

“It was unclear if spitting on me was intentional or not,” the deputy wrote.

The man was taken to the Beaufort County Detention Center.
