Drivers should use caution when driving on U.S. 278 Sunday morning as Bluffton Police Department investigators reconstruct a crash that killed a 27-year-old Hilton Head Island teacher and her unborn child.

Officers of the department’s Collision Reconstruction Unit will be reconstructing the crash that killed Jesse Floyd, who was 26 weeks pregnant when the vehicle she and her husband, Ryan Floyd, drove in was involved in a three-vehicle crash at the intersection of eastbound U.S. 278 and Buck Island Road on July 26, according to a police department news release.

The reconstruction will cause intermittent lane closures and traffic disruption at the intersection as it is conducted from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m.

“Our CRU team will be out there early to disrupt flow as little as possible,” Police Chief Joseph Manning said. “However, we ask motorists who will be driving in this area on Sunday to be patient.”

Jesse Floyd was the passenger in an SUV driven by her husband. Their vehicle was one of two that struck a third vehicle that stalled while making a left turn from westbound U.S. 278 onto Buck Island Road.

Floyd succumbed to her injuries after she was flown to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah. Her husband suffered head lacerations and a broken ankle in the incident that happened around 2:45 p.m.

Jesse Floyd was just about to start the school year as a second grade teacher at Hilton Head Island Elementary.
