Fake firefighters are scamming their way into South Carolina homes

Two men posing as firefighters are scamming their way into homes under the pretense of checking smoke detectors, WLOS reports.

Ryan Flood, a Greenville County sheriff's spokesman, said that the suspects are claiming to be firefighters with different county fire departments and asking to check smoke detectors, according to WLOS. Flood also said that the suspects were in a red truck in at least one instance.

According to the Greenville County Fire Chief's Association, their departments are not going to homes to check detectors, said WLOS. Anyone who encounters someone attempting to do so is encouraged to contact authorities.

WLOS reports that law enforcement is working to find the suspects.
